South Norfolk Council is celebrating Local Democracy Week this week, with councillors, schools and young people all involved.
Here is a list of events under the headings of each event. It does includes events which too place today (Monday 13 October):
LifeSwap
This is where pupils use their snaps camera to take a photograph every 30 minutes of what they are doing over the course of 12 hours.
LifeSwap is a unique insight to the lives of five young people. It explores the everyday things that are important to them.
South Norfolk Council will publish those pictures alongside those taken by South Norfolk Council Deputy Leader Councillor Martin Wilby, who will be doing the same.
The schools involved are: Spooner Row Primary School (Community), Diss Church Junior School (Voluntary Controlled), Saxlingham Nethergate Church Of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School, Wymondham High School, and Tasburgh Preston Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School
Take Your Councillor to School.
In this, a councillor joins pupils for the day at school, experiencing lessons, addressing school councils and leading citizenship classes.
Spooner Row Primary School (community) on 13th October - South Norfolk Council Chairman, Councillor Margaret Dewsbury talks about her role as council chairman, tours the school and sits in on a School Council Meeting. She also sat in on lessons.
Diss Junior School on 15th October - Councillor Keith Tilcock will enjoy an assembly and a full day of lessons. He will have the opportunity to talk to the young people about Local Democracy Week and his role in the council.
Saxlingham Nethergate Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School on 14th October - Councillor Sue Thomson will talk about her role in the council and about Local Democracy Week.
Wymondham High School on 15th October - Councillor Joe Mooney will enjoy leading sessions for 120 year 13 ‘A Level’ students from 2pm to 3pm; and from 3pm to 4pm, he will address 175 Year 12 ‘6th Form’ Students.
Afterwards he will talk to the School Council about his role as a District Councillor and about Local Democracy Week.
Long Stratton High School on 13th October - Councillor Alison Thomas sits with a Year 8 citizenship class and give a talk on her role in the council. She will also join Year 7 citizenship classes.
Tasburgh Preston Church of England Voluntary Controlled Primary School on 14th October - Councillor Alison Thomas meets year six students. The pupils will interview her and put into practice some training they received from the local press.
Hethersett High School 14th October - Councillor Michelle Monck arrives at 8.30am when Mike Baldwin, head teacher, will give her a conducted tour of the school.
Councillor Monck will visit various classes throughout the day describing her role as a District Councillor and talk about Local Democracy Week.
Roydon Primary School (Community) on 16th October - Norfolk County Councillor Jenny Chamberlain will visit this school to talk about her role in the County Council and Local Democracy Week.
Eillingham Voluntary Controlled Primary School on 27th October - Councillor Tony Game will enjoy a full day visiting students.
He will address assembly and talk about his role in the District Council and Local Democracy Week.
Gillingham St Michael’s Church of England Voluntary Aided First School on 17th October - Councillor Tony Game has a full day visiting the students, will address assembly and talk about his role in the District Council and Local Democracy Week.
Wymondham College on 15th October - Councillor Jon Herbert will be touring the school, addressing the school council and taking questions from various classes throughout the day.
Political Speed Dating
This is a fun way for young people to interact with their Councillors. Like conventional Speed Dating, each session consists of a series of three-minute dates.
During this time young people can ask anything accept their age, party affiliation and place of residence. At the gong, they move on.
The Councillors are scored on approachability, listening skills, understanding issues and actually answering the questions.
On 16th October, the Councillors involved are: Councillors William Kemp, David Bills, Tony Game and Joe Mooney .
On 17th October, Councillors involved are Tony Game, Keith Weeks, Pauline Allen, Dr Murray Gray, Martin Wilby, Jenny Wilby, David Bills, Alison Thomas and Lesley Dale.
Question Time
Councillors and senior staff take formal questions from an audience of just under 20 young people on 16th October.
Those involved are South Norfolk Council Leader John Fuller, Andy Radford Director of Finance and Acting Chief Executive and Chris Cook Director of Tourism, Heritage Enterprise and Culture.
