New Wayfarer dinghies given to train young people

Added: 26/06/2008
Category: Broads Authority

The Broads Authority will hand over five brand new Wayfarer sailing dinghies to the Norfolk Schools Sailing Association at a Family Fun Day on Saturday 28 June,11am.

The boats, together worth over £30,000, have replaced 20 year old Wayfarers which had become uneconomic to maintain.

They were part funded by the Broads Authority’s Sustainable Development Fund (SDF), which provided £15,224 and the Foundation for Sports and the Arts (funded by Littlewoods Pools) which donated £15,000.

Simon Daniels, a member of the Broads Authority and the SDF panel, himself a Broads sailor, will officially hand over the boats.

The NSSA is a voluntary organisation that teaches children from 8 -18 years old to sail for a membership fee of £30 a year, which includes training courses. There is also an adult training programme to generate more instructors.
Members start off in single-handed Optimists, move on to Toppers and progress to the double-handed Wayfarers which provide more advanced sailing and spinnaker training.

The new Wayfarers, which have been named after Broads wildlife, will make their maiden voyage taking members of the public sailing at the Family Fun Day . Taster sessions in single handed dinghies will be offered on a first come first served basis. There will also be stalls, games, tea and cakes.

The Association has a small car park on the left of the main Filby Road travelling from Great Yarmouth and there is a larger public car park on the right, the other side of the bridge.
