The completion of a £152,000 project that is helping hundreds of children stay safe on their way to and from school will be celebrated on Friday 16 May when the Chairman of Norfolk County Council inspects a new Puffin Crossing on Norwich Road, Attleborough.
The need for a better crossing outside Attleborough's Infant and High schools was highlighted by a 1,300-signature petition, arranged by local resident Alan Maclaren, and backed by the Town Council. A detailed assessment carried out by the County Council confirmed that the location, numbers of school children and levels of traffic made it a high priority for a crossing.
A Puffin crossing was recommended as providing the greatest assistance to the school crossing patrol, as well as providing safer crossing for all pedestrians at other times. The work, which included widening and resurfacing the existing footways on either side of the crossing, drainage improvements and carriageway resurfacing, was completed earlier this year.
The new Chairman of the County Council, Wyndham Northam*, will be joined by children from local schools to celebrate its completion and to acknowledge the contributions by various people and organisations in highlighting a problem and coming up with a solution. This will take place on Friday 16 May at 2.30pm, with people assembling at the crossing at 2.15. Refreshments will be provided at the Attleborough Community & Enterprise Centre afterwards.
